Bolivia photography

Bolivia is a fantastic little country (pop. only 8 million) full of friendly people and pyschedellic landscapes. I took many photos of Bolivia during my visit in 2005 most of which conveyed the beauty of the country.

With its fantastic natural beauty and great history Bolivia is a must-see for all budding photographers. There are highlights that cannot be missed and below I'll take you through some of the photography gems including La Paz and the beautiful Salar de Uyuni.

Taking photos around Bolivia

The following are tips on sites, places, areas of interest that make great opportunities for photography round Bolivia. Of course in the end you should not force a photograph, let it find you.

La Paz photos

Being the world's highest capital city the first thing you'll notice when entering La Paz is the spectacular views. Example of La Paz's landscape.

La Paz is certainly a maze of winding alley ways, steep hills and run down districts. In the most part I felt fairly safe taking photos and was never really troubled (except for the irritating and rather intimadting shoe shine boys).

There are no major photographic highlights that I can mention. For sure there are multiple churches and the picturesque Palacio Presidencial (seen the wars) but its more a case of walking round and photographing life as you come across it.

I did take an excursion out to the valle de la luna which afforded spectactular rock formations and mountain back drops.

Lake Titicaca photos

To me Lake Titicaca was one of the highlights of my South American travels. Not only was it vast in proportion but the water was so clear and light so bright that it made for great photography.

I took the majority of my harbour shots from the exotic sounding Copacabana. The town itself is fairly bland (although there are some great derelict buildings to photograph) but its from the shores, when the sun sets, that you get the best photographs.

To get some great water shots head for a tour on the 'isla del sol' ... bear in mind its hard work if you are shifting a lot of camera gear.

Towards the Peruvian side it's also worth taking in the 'Isla Flotantes' which are handmade islands of reeds on which people work and live ... it's got a bit touristy but does make for some interesting photos.

Salar de Uyuni photos

It might be a bit of a trek to get to Salar de uyuni but once there its unforgettable. This is a short extract from my journal

"Whilst driving along these endless white salt plains one feels as if one were on another planet other than Earth. An intense, sparkling blanket of white salt contrasts with a deep saphire sky. The tranquility and absolute isolation of Salar de Uyuni came thundering home during sun set. Standing away from the transport not a whisper could be heard whilst the bleeding red sun melted into the frosty white ocean."

The worlds largest salt lake certainly makes for some exquisite photography. My two recommendations for photography in this area are:

1/ Isla de los pescadores. A break in the oceans of white salt are broken by enormous cactii that are all over this 'island'.

2/ Cementerio de Trenes. Wow this is a photographers dream! A huge amount of broken, derelict train carriages rot under the Bolivian sun. Due to the climate they all have interesting rust formations. Unfortunately I was only able to spend half an hour photographing the trains but i would certainly go back to capture these eerie vehicles.

Coroico photos

Although you have to travel on the worlds most dangerous road to get there its well worth it when you arrive. Coroico is perched 1500m above sea level and is a little paradise from the hustle and bustle of La Paz.

You can get some spectacular shots of the surrounding jungle from this location. I hired a horse and guide to travel around El Calvario and its well worth it.

As an aside I would like to recommend hostal Cafetel which had hammocks overlooking spectacular views. Unfortunately the film I took was ruined whilst up there so I have no photographs of the area.
